PEOPLE
10/16/05: "RUN FOR THE GIRAFFES" 5K
1st Annual - Fills to limit with 500+ runners!
True XC course - Lion King music - Ostrich egg awards.
Held on the 400 acres of Safari West just outside of Santa Rosa off River Road that takes you towards Calistoga.
Nota a zoo, not a drive-through park, it's a wildlife preserve where you can observe African animals in a natural habitat. You can even stay there overnight in authentic Tent Cabins
It's here that Terry Cotter, one of the guides at Safari West, put together a true XC course that winds through the preserve. Sandy and I consulted on the race and did the timing.
Was a perfect day for the run and though we had to delay the start due to shuttling runners from parking area, the run was a success.
We had a number of our group show up to participate on a busy weekend of races. The giraffes and several antelope came over to the start area to look at what was going on.
Interesting to note that Gideon, who wrote the song from Lion King called "Circle of Life" played African drums on the course which motivated folks to run faster.
E.J. Bohn (42) won it in 19:32 (yes, there was a good hill on the course); top Female: Cathy Dubay (40-new master) in 22:19 and 6th overall. APRIL POWERS came with family and had stayed overnight was 8th, 2nd Female in 24:01. (I thank husband, Jim Edgcomb, for helping to time the race);
LINDA LINDSAY (40+) was 17th overall in 25:45; She ran it as a last tune-up for the World Championships of the XTERRA SERIES TRIATHLON in Maui set for this weekend...
BILL DONNELLY 27:09; 29th TRICIA WALLACE in 27:13; CRAGI STERN 41st in 29:20; KEVIN PORTER, 48th in 29:45; 52nd KIM BLUE in 30:23; 55th JANET BODLE won 1st in 50+ in 31:10;
Many folks came to walk the course or jog it easy with family members.
109th/110th was YVONNE GEN in 37:40 along with DAVE CHAMPAGNE in 37:41; 112th MORGAN BLUE in 37:55; 115th MELANIE BLUE in 38:15 (under 11 years); 219th ARIANNA LINDSAY also under 11 yrs in 53:40 - she ran the whole way!..NORM CAMPI hiked it with friends in 67:59.
This race is already scheduled for next year on 10/15/06. I'm sure it will fill to the 500 limit by pre-reg so we'll keep you updated on when entries open up...
